Mission Statement
Through the mentor teacher program, Kendall County Special Education Cooperative believes mentors and mentees will grow both professionally and personally and that scientifically data based teaching will both be encouraged and acknowledged while supporting the creative art of teaching.
The purpose of the Mentor Teacher Program is to:
- Offer support and guidance to teachers new to the Cooperative:
- Provide the best instructional and learning environment for students
- Model and encourage best practice
- Develop collaboration, collegiality and participation in a continuous learning community
The Mentor Teacher Program has the following components:
- Advisory Committee
- Special Education Administrator/Coordinators
- Mentor Team Leader/Chairperson
- Teachers
- Mentors
- Mentees
Participants will be given up to four hours release time per month to work in the mentor teacher program. Additional time will be agreed upon between the coordinator/special education administrator, mentor team leader, and mentor. Every attempt will be made to schedule mentee/mentor meetings during non-student contact time. All compensation will be determined per contract language.
Mentor Teacher Advisory Committee - Composition (determined by contract language)
- Advisory committee will consist of six members: two administrators, three teachers and the Mentor Team Leader
- Advisory Committee members will commit for a one-year term
- Advisory Committee members may continue for additional years
- The committee will make recommendations for a Mentor Team Leader to the Director
Mentor Characteristics
The mentor models professional growth and supports the non-tenured teacher's professional development. Mentors model continual, scientific and data based teaching, visible learning accomplishments, openness to feedback, and the daily, career-long effort to be the best educators possible. The mentors demonstrate people skills and value the development of thinking skills, reflective practices and data based teaching.
